A market garden is a garden to grow produce or flowers for sale or donation. The Northeast Market Garden has urban farmers that grow to sell at our farmstand onsite Saturday mornings or in our Audubon Farmers Market Thursday afternoons. The Northeast Market Garden also has a number of volunteers that help grow food for donation for our local food shelves.
A food hub is a type of food distribution system that helps connect local food producers (such as farmers) with local consumers (such as restaurants, grocery stores, or individuals) in a more efficient way.
Food hubs can take many different forms, but they often involve a physical location where local farmers can drop off their products, and where buyers can come to pick them up.
The idea behind food hubs is to make it easier for local food producers to sell their products to local buyers, which can help support the local economy and increase access to fresh, healthy food for everyone.
Veggie Rx is a program that helps promote healthy eating habits by providing individuals with vouchers or "prescriptions" that can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers' markets like the Northeast Market Garden or the Audubon Farmers Market.
The program is typically targeted towards people who may be at risk for diet-related health problems, such as low-income families or individuals with chronic diseases like diabetes.
By giving people vouchers to buy fresh produce, Veggie Rx aims to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables, which can help improve their overall health and reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases. The program also helps support local farmers and promote the consumption of fresh, locally-grown produce.
The term "emerging farmer" typically refers to individuals or groups who are beginning to establish themselves in the field of agriculture and may face various challenges related to their lack of experience, limited access to resources, or limited access to markets. We encourage emerging farmers that may come from diverse backgrounds, including young people, women, minorities, veterans, seniors, and individuals with limited financial resources to consider urban farming.
In many countries, emerging farmers are seen as a critical part of efforts to increase food security and support sustainable agriculture. Governments, NGOs, and private sector organizations often provide support and training to help emerging farmers develop the skills and resources they need to succeed in agriculture.
The Northeast Market Garden has created opportunities for emerging farmers to learn from experts in the field, as well as try out first hand what if feels like to be a farmer. We offer training, experience, an opportunity to sell what you produce, a platform on which to sell your produce, and direct connections to farmers and advice that can reduce the risk of becoming a new, emerging farmer.
An urban farm is an agricultural operation located within a city or urban area that produces food or other agricultural products. It can take many different forms, from rooftop gardens to community gardens to aquaponic systems, and may involve growing vegetables, fruits, herbs, or even raising small animals such as chickens or bees.
The purpose of urban farming is to increase access to fresh, locally-grown food in urban areas, which may otherwise be limited by the lack of available space or transportation. It can also provide opportunities for community building and education around sustainable agriculture practices.
Urban farms may be run by individuals, community groups, or commercial enterprises, and may operate on a for-profit or non-profit basis. They may use various techniques such as hydroponics, vertical farming, or composting to maximize space and efficiency. Urban farming has become increasingly popular in recent years as people look for ways to address food insecurity, reduce their environmental footprint, and connect with their local communities.
The Northeast Market Garden provides space for urban farmers, and also emerging farmers to produce food for local sale and consumption. The garden will also provide additional benefits to the Audubon Neighborhood by creating food production beds intended for donation to local food shelves. In addition, it provides a space for people to learn farming production methods as well as a social community space that strengthens our neighborhood as a whole and creates resiliency for future unknown occurances.
